Going into free agency, the Canucks had 2 spots to fill. The most important part was finding a #2 Center. After that, the team needed a def. With a lot of forwards available this year in free agency, the question was not if they could find their center but who it would be.
All eyes were set on Charlie Coyle. After a miserable 23/24 season, the team went into the off season looking for more size and more defensive players. Gm Brisson moved small person Cole Caufield, and brought in a list of bigger guys including Hedman. Coyle would fit exactly with what the team wanted. A big defensive center (6'3, 218lbs) who leads all forwards in def rating. Look for him to also run the top penalty kill.
Next up was a def. Once again Gm Brisson looked for an imposing player physically. A reasonable bid on David Savard ended up being the winner and the Canucks line up was ready for the upcoming season. Savard, at 6'1 and 238lbs brings a heavy presence at defence and will also run the top pk on the back end. Like Coyle, Savard is at the top (2nd) in def rating at his position.
In smaller moves, Vancouver was able to sign Ryan Suter and James Reimer for depth purposes and will have the pair play for the farm team until needed in the pros. Expect a few more bids to gather a bit more depth up front but the heavy work is done.
Next up, training camp and preseason.
