While looking through all of the DCHL non-contenders rosters trying to find a couple of players who could complement the current roster, it became apparently clear that the majority that is out there is bad contracts and very few hopefuls.
The first move brought in Patrick Marleau. While his best days are behind him, Marleau still makes for a very serviceable bottom 6 for us who can step up in the lineup if needed. "The $2.6M hit isn't great, but not horrible and is just for this year."
Back to the question in mind. Who the #%$& is Bryan Rust and why did someone just trade a conditional 1st round pick, a couple of 4ths, 4 Million, and C. Fischer?
Sure I had heard of Rust, 3rd rounder, college kid, got lucky playing with Crosby a lot of his career, and winning a pair of Cups early. His steady defensive play and ability to produce with Sid have also given him some excellent all-around sim ratings. With an 84 on defense, 79 scoring, and 75 passing ratings and a cap hit under $700k for couple of seasons make him a DCHL unicorn. Wait till he's a UFA, easy $10M salary in the DCHL! All I can say is thank you Sidney Crosby and keep them playing together in the NHL until at least the end of this year!
"Getting someone like Rust who can play top 6 for us and specialty teams for that cap hit gives us the flexibility to try to add another top 6 before the deadline. Having him for next season with what's going to be arguably better ratings is the icing on the cake. If we had to deal with other contenders who were tight to the cap closer to the deadline, we would have been paying a lot more and probably wouldn't have got him."
"The 1st round pick always stings but we have top 5 protection just in case and If it ends up being a 2022 1st then we had a hell of playoffs! Fischer has been quite a disappointment. We really hoped he was gonna work out for us and hope he turns it around."
"We have spent years collecting talent and our cupboards are overflowing with excellent prospects, so overpaying slightly right now to win now is just part of the game. We do still have our prized Chicago 1st this year which is a nice little lottery ticket!"
