Carolina Hurricanes Name Rick Bowness Interim Head Coach

Hurricanes find their new coach.
11/1/2025 • Mike Giletto

Raleigh, NC — November 1, 2025 — The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Rick Bowness has been named interim head coach, effective immediately.

Bowness, 70, brings more than four decades of coaching experience to Raleigh and an extensive DCHL résumé that includes time behind the bench with the Calgary Flames, New York Islanders, and most recently, the Vancouver Canucks. Across 412 career regular-season games, Bowness has compiled a record of 196–180–36, along with 41 playoff appearances and 21 postseason victories.

“We’re fortunate to have someone with Rick’s experience and leadership step in at this time,” said Hurricanes General Manager Mike Giletto. “He’s a proven communicator and steady presence who will help stabilize our group and get us back on track.”

The Hurricanes (3–4–3) made the change following a difficult start to the 2025–26 campaign. Bowness, known for his defensive structure and veteran poise, is expected to emphasize team discipline and accountability as the Hurricanes look to climb the standings.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with this talented group,” Bowness said. “Carolina has a proud tradition of hard work and commitment, and I’m looking forward to helping this team find its identity and compete every night.”

Bowness previously guided Vancouver to a 52–24–6 record last season and a deep playoff run coming just short of a Stanley Cup victory, earning recognition for his calm approach and ability to bring out the best in his players.
