With the DCHL draft around the corner, we have decided to look at potential picks for the Coyotes, who continue to position themselves with opportunities to select future stars of this league.
In the 2021 DCHL draft, the Coyotes hold the 2nd overall pick, acquired from the Rangers during last year’s draft that saw Arizona send multiple firsts the other way, and their own pick of 15th overall.
The Vancouver Canucks hold the 1st spot in the draft, and if the rumors are correct, they are looking to select a forward with the pick.
“It doesn’t matter to our organization who is taken with the first overall selection”, said the GM of the Coyotes. “Over the last few years, we as an organization have tried to make our team as well rounded as possible and that philosophy is used as well when we are selecting our prospects as well”.
It’s hard to be upset about selecting the consensus number two pick in the draft, Centerman Matthew Beniers, with the second overall pick but there is the possibility of Defeseman Owen Power being available as well. The Coyotes also have a history of drafting defensemen in the first round (Bouchard, Bean, Fabbro, Johnson) so it would come as no shock for the team to make that selection either. If the Coyotes opt to select a forward, we expect them to select either Matthew Beniers, Mason McTavish, or Kent Johnson. The Coyotes have actively been looking for an upgrade at the 2C position so selecting one of these players fits what they are trying to do, however they are still a way away from helping compete for a Stanley Cup.
At the 15th spot, the list of players that the Coyotes will select from becomes much harder to predict. “It’s an absolute crapshoot” said the GM. “I think all of the players outside the top 10 picks are all very interchangeable with each other until about 20. It all comes down to who you’ve had the opportunity to scout more given this pandemic and of course preference to the type of player you are looking to add”.
We expect the Coyotes to take the opposite position from their earlier pick. At forward, expected picks include Cole Sillinger, Matthew Coronato, Brennan Othmann, Zachary Bolduc, Chad Lucius and Fedor Svechkov. On defence, expected picks include Carson Lambos, Corson Ceulemans, and possibly Brandt Clarke is he manages to slip further down the board.
Either way the Arizona Coyotes and incredibly excited for the opportunity to be selecting 2nd and 15th overall this season and are looking forward to both the Seattle Expansion Draft and the 2021 DCHL Entry Draft.
