State of Detroit

State of Detroit

The Wings were not very active in the off season Free Agency.  While one of the bald guys appeared to pull the last remaining overgrown hairs from his earlobes wondering where the Wings GM was during this period, the answer is quite simple, Out of Country.  Yes, Detroit was able to make a few acquisitions however the market was extremely overpriced and with all the made up ‘anti-tank’ rules, Detroit chose to not waste funds in Free Agency, instead focusing on some RFA contracts that will need to be attended to.

So the current state of Detroit lies with a group of young players who are trending a year behind in the DCHL apposed to the real world.  Detroit is very excited with the progress of these young players and we look forward to taking a big step forward when they are ready.  The core of this team is finally starting to mature however Detroit is fully aware of their needs.

Goalie

Oh boy.  This will need to be addressed most likely through trade or free agency as the pipeline is pretty thin.  Detroit believes that Alexei Kolosov may indeed be the goaltender of the future, but at 21 we are aware that future is not tomorrow.

Defence

Similar to above, Defence will need to be addressed by way of Free Agency to fill in some key holes.  Prospects like Edvinsson and Zellweger are a couple years away and the Wings have had some disappointment in other prospects along the way.

Forwards

This is a positive area for Detroit with a group of young players finally making their way through the system.  Being led by Pavelski and Zuccarello, current roster players like Thomas, Dach, Byfield, Quinn, Guenther will be the leading figures moving forward.  Followed up by prospects Shane Wright and Ryan Leonard the following couple years.  This will be the core for many years to come hopefully.

So to put it all in perspective, Detroit feels like they are moving forward even if it is at a snails pace.  And while Statler and Waldorf may have displayed some disappointment at the pace of Detroits development, the GM and team will move steadily along and will look to improve each and every game.
