Good evening and welcome to the 10th edition of What's Hot and What's Not.
This week's edition will feature the trade market,  a few gm's inactivity and we'll revisit last week's 1st rnd picks value
with a little more information.

What's Hot:  Trades

Since jan 10th, there has been a total of 12 deals made.  We've had all kinds of deals, 1st rnd picks, top prospects, star players and we've even had a rare coach trade.  Gm Wilson cleaned house with 5 deals, moving his top asset Tanev in the process for 1 of 2 1sts rnd picks traded in the last 7 days.  In another blockbuster, Gm Laplante moved on from underachiever Steven Stamkos (14 pts in 29gp) for Nj's 1st rnd pick from Nashville.  This pick will surely be moved again for another star to help the Isles on their cup run.   The biggest winner was clearly genius Gm Brisson stealing Brennan Mennell for a lousy 7th from non-genius Gm Wilson.  Mennell is expected to win a couple norris trophies and average 7 pts a game against in former team.

What's not:  Gm's inactivity

We still have 2 goalies who have played 100% of their teams game, goalie fatigue might need to be tweaked but thats another conversation to be had.   Nashville did make a trade for superstar Stamkos but maybe should focus on getting another #1 goalie if they want some help in net later in the season as Bobrovsky has played all 43 games of his team.   The 2nd team here is the Edmonton Oilers, where like Bob, Tuuka Rask has played in all 43 games.  The other thing to notice is Zibanejad who is the team's most important player has been back for quite a while from his injury but still is scratched and isnt playing.   Get at it boys.

What's hot:  Steve Downs' historic stats preservation

Last week, we talked about the value of 1st rnd picks outside the lottery in this league, on how it can be a homerun, or how most often than not, the pick doesnt pan out.  We had the data from the draft year 2016 to 2018.  Mr Downs was kind enough to provide us the 2015 draft which would help with this dilemna.

In the 2015 draft, we had Kyle connor at 15oa, Chabot at 17, Konecny at 18, Boeser at 21.
There is also some promising players like Guryanov, Eriksson Ek, Samsonov, Beauvilier.
Based on this draft, the non lottery picks are very valuable, is it because they had more time to develop or was it just a strong draft outside the norm?  Only the future will tell.

This draft also showed how bad some lottery picks can be.
Dylan Strome at 5oa, Lawson Crouse was picked 7th ahead of Rantanen. Then we have the Nhl Bruins players with one of the biggest draft failure of recent time, Zboril at 12 and Shenyshyn at 14 who both combine for 15 nhl points after being drafted 6 years ago.

Thanks for tuning in.
You stay classy, Dchl
