After what would be considered a very “mid” start to the 2022-23 DCHL season, the Coyotes have found their groove under the leadership of new Head Coach Dave Tippett. Since joining the team at the beginning of December, the Coyotes have jumper from 6th to now 2nd in the division. They Coyotes are 9-3-2 since Tippett joined and are riding a league leading 7 game win streak.
There was no secret in Arizona that the dressing room had gone sour, as it is rumored that long-time head coach Peter Laviolette had given preferential treatment to defenseman Roman Josi, who upon being traded to Arizona was immediately given an “A”.
With ownership being happy with the bones of the team, it was after careful consideration that Arizona move on from Laviolette, who helped Arizona to a Presidents Trophy (not mid) in 2019-20 with 120 points, when they were still a member of the Pacific Division.
Tippett acknowledged the lack of defensive minded players holding the blue line for the Coyotes and eventually managed to get both Roman Josi and long time Coyote, Torey Krug, traded to Boston, in return for Adam Larsson, Erik Johnson, John Beecher, and a 2023 1st.
Since the trade, Evan Bouchard had made the jump up to PP1 where he has been thriving and is now riding an 8 game point streak. Look for Bouchard to be a potential dark horse candidate for the Calder Trophy as the season continues.
The Coyotes next play the San Jose Sharks, who will be a great test for the team as they currently sit 2nd in the conference. The last matchup saw Arizona squeeze out a big 5-4 OT win in San Jose, where the Coyotes have a dominant 16-7-3 away record. Tomorrow the Sharks travel to Mullet Arena where the Coyotes have had a “mid” level of success (5-5-3), but look to continue the win streak.
