Unsung Hero Leaves His Mark

In the 2017 offseason the Flyers made an unheralded trade sending Ben Hutton and Nick Cousins to the St. Louis Blues for veteran forward Sam Gagner and a 2018 3rd round pick(Matej Pekar). Gagner had an impressive debut season for the Flyers in 2017-2018 with 17 goals and 47 points but it was Gagner’s playoff performance that was one for the ages.

Gagner completed one of the most potent trios in DCHL playoff history as he played with Logan Couture and T.J. Oshie. In only 23 post-season games Gagner scored 9 goals and 35 points good for 5th in DCHL playoff scoring. While both Couture and Oshie moved to other teams in the 2018 offseason Gagner remained and upped his performance the following season.

Instead of a top line role with star players Gagner lined up with Martin Hanzal and Brendan Perlini as part of the best 4th line in the history of the DCHL. Gagner put up 22 goals and 51 points during the season but what was most impressive was his +44 with all three members of the line ending the season in the top 10 for DCHL +/- as they eviscerated their competition.

After 2 impressive seasons and a playoff run for the ages things started to dry up for Gagner in the 2019 playoffs when he only scored 1 goal and 3 points over 17 games. Gagner did not do much better during the 19-20 season when he scored only 2 goals and 9 points over 69 games as the team worked in younger players to try and jolt bottom 6 production. In the 2020 playoffs Gagner was held scoreless over 13 games while his time with the DCHL Flyers came to a quiet end.

All in all Gagner played 233 regular season games and 53 playoff games for the Flyers and will go down as one of the most under-appreciated and unsung heroes in franchise history. As both team and player move on we wish Sam Gagner the best of luck as he plays out his lavish 6-year contract for the Chicago Blackhawks!
